Community events have a special way of bringing people together, creating spaces where neighbors become friends and shared experiences turn into lasting memories.
Pig Roast
The Banks Township Annual Pig Roast is a family festival filled with fun, food, and fellowship. Held every year on the third Saturday in June, this beloved tradition began in 1981 as a fundraiser to refurbish the upstairs of the Township Hall.
Festivities kick off Friday evening with a waterslide, games, and plenty of great food for all ages. On Saturday, the day begins with a 5K run/walk, followed by a lively parade through town. Afterward, everyone gathers at the Community Park for children’s activities, a craft fair, delicious food, and more.
It’s a celebration of community spirit and a chance for families, friends, and neighbors to come together and enjoy everything that makes Banks Township special.
Memorial Day Observance
Community members come together each year to honor the men and women who have given their lives in the name of freedom. The Memorial Day ceremonies begin early, as members of the Jansen-Richardson American Legion Post 488 gather to pay tribute at the cemeteries in Norwood, Antrim City, and the Catholic Cemetery along U.S. 31. They are joined by the Ellsworth High School Band at the Atwood and Ellsworth cemeteries, where a short program is held featuring special music and guest speakers.
The tribute continues as the group forms a parade and proceeds to the Ellsworth waterfront. There, a wreath is placed to honor those lost at sea, followed by a volley salute and the playing of taps—solemn moments that remind all in attendance of the sacrifices made for our freedoms.
For many years, Legion member and former Township Clerk John Kooyer organized these meaningful services, often enhancing them with special music performed by himself, his sons, and his grandsons. Since his passing, his grandson, Dr. Kurt Kooyer, has carried on the tradition, traveling from North Dakota to serve as master of ceremonies, ensuring that the legacy of remembrance continues.
Baseball and Softball Program
Youth baseball and softball offer far more than learning to hit, throw, and catch—they provide an experience that helps kids grow, build confidence, and form lasting connections!
Our programs include t-ball, youth baseball and softball for ages 4 through 14.
Practices and games begin in mid-May and continue through the second week of July.
