Remembering Our Loved Ones

Banks Township is home to four public cemeteries, each with its own unique history and setting. Three cemeteries are open for burials, except the Catholic Cemetery, due to its geography and limited historical records it is preserved as a historic site.

The Township maintains all four cemeteries with care and respect. Each Memorial Day, the local American Legion Post honors our veterans by placing flags on their graves, ensuring their service is remembered and celebrated.

For cemetery records and burial lot sales please contact the Banks Township offices: (231) 588-6126 or (231) 419-0355.

Atwood Cemetery

Located on Church Road about two miles southeast of Atwood, was established and maintained by a Cemetery Association until 1996. It is now under the care of Banks Township.

Ellsworth Cemetery

Located on Eaton Road, about one mile west of Ellsworth, this cemetery—formerly known as Boss Cemetery—has served as a place of rest since the early 1900s. Banks Township assumed maintenance in 1962 and has since expanded the grounds twice, nearly tripling their original size.

Catholic Cemetery

Located on U.S. 31, just north of Essex Road, the Catholic Cemetery is believed to have been established in the 1870s by the Catholic congregation of Atwood. It is now owned and maintained by Banks Township.

Due to the lack of burial records and challenging terrain, the cemetery is no longer used for burials. The Township continues to preserve this historic site to prevent deterioration.

Antrim City Cemetery

Located on Old Dixie Highway, overlooking Lake Michigan, this cemetery is near the historic site of the once-thriving lumber town of Antrim City and dates back to the 1870s. In the 1990s, Banks Township cleared and prepared additional burial lots on the lower level, making it a popular choice for residents on the western side of the township.
